General Info

If you’re exploring the food scene in Hood River, Grasslands Barbecue is one spot that quickly stands out. Tucked along Portway Ave, this barbecue restaurant delivers a relaxed, welcoming vibe that feels just right whether you’re stopping by after a day outdoors or meeting friends for a casual meal.

From the moment you settle into the seating-especially if you grab one of the outdoor tables-you get that classic barbecue experience: laid-back, a little smoky in the air, and full of anticipation. The menu is focused but thoughtfully put together, making it easy to navigate without feeling limited. Every item feels intentional, and the balance between traditional barbecue and creative sides keeps things interesting.

The Pork Belly Burnt Ends are easily a highlight. They arrive rich, tender, and packed with deep, smoky flavor that melts as you bite in. It’s the kind of dish you remember long after you leave. Pair that with the Tex Mex Coleslaw, and you get a refreshing contrast-crisp, slightly tangy, and with just enough kick to keep your palate awake.

Then there’s the Truffle Mac and Cheese, which leans indulgent in the best way. Creamy, aromatic, and comforting, it adds a bit of upscale flair to the otherwise rustic barbecue spread. The Smashed Potatoes are another solid choice-crispy edges, soft centers, and perfectly seasoned, making them a dependable side that complements everything on the plate.

For those who enjoy variety, the sausages and sides round out the experience nicely. They add depth to the menu and give you options if you’re sharing or building a sampler-style meal. It’s clear that the kitchen pays attention to both flavor and consistency, which shows in every dish.

Beyond the food, the services here make a difference. The wheelchair accessible entrance ensures inclusivity, while the availability of alcohol and beer adds to the casual, social atmosphere. Whether you’re sipping a cold drink outside or enjoying a relaxed indoor meal, the setup feels comfortable and unpretentious.

Reviews from visitors often mention the easygoing environment and the quality of the dishes, and it’s easy to see why. Grasslands Barbecue manages to strike a balance between hearty, satisfying food and a welcoming space that encourages you to stay a little longer.

“ Hubby and took a drive from Vancouver, Wa to Hood River to try this spot that I found on instagram. We’ll travel for some good barbecue. This is a food truck, but worth it. The line was long, but seemed to move along quickly. The food was amazing!! I did not like the sauce for our beef rib. Overall really good food. Not enough tables in the lawn area to sit and enjoy your food. So bring your own or a blanket to lounge in the grass. There’s a bar/restaurant next to the food cart if you want to get a cider/beer while you wait. ”

“ This is the best BBQ in Northwest Oregon. It is worth the drive from Portland for sure. The Pork belly burnt ends are some of the best things I've ever eaten. Don't miss ordering the slaw either! ”

- Josh Lenker -

“ The Grasslands crew always delivers! Pork belly burnt ends are always a must-have, the pulled pork has brisket-like bark, their chicken is a staple, and the summer-Sundays-only tri-tip satisfies the craving for smoked beef without the richness of brisket. Definitely stop by when you're anywhere near Hood River. ”

“ Okay some of the best BBQ I’ve had in OR. You should go! 1. The pork belly burnt ends were phenomenal. 2. The Texas slaw was so unique, so flavorful, and went well with everything! 3. The BBQ sauce was great, with pulled pork on white bread and a pickle- the perfect bite. 4. It’s great that you can take your food into Ferment Brewing which has ample seating space, heated outdoor seating and a big menu as well! Downsides: they’re only open 1 day a week and they sell out fast. ”

“ You know that feeling when you leave a great concert, movie, vacation, when you drop into a deep depression and are constantly mentally returning whenever the moment allows? That is precisely the feeling you will have after eating here. Food elsewhere just flat out does not compare. The brisket is flavorful, tender, and juicy. The pulled pork is phenomenal, piled up high on their sandwiches paired with soft toasted buns and an incredible aoli spread that almost had me munching on the plate until a passerby slapped it away from my mouth. The sausage as well, hits the nail on the head with the perfect ratio of filler and meat. It is a good thing they are 1 hour from me, or I would quickly go broke eating here, and would be the happiest fattest homeless guy you ever did see. Come, and experience all the different decadent meats and sides they have to try at Grasslands Barbeque ”

“ There’s “bbq” there there’s Grasslands their bbq is on whole nother category some of the best in the nation. Whatever you need to do get to Hood River you won’t be disappointed; briskets, hatch cheddar sausage, pork belly burnt ends (don’t pass on those), tri-tip, Mac and cheese, pulled pork sandwich-missing anything? Haha I think you’ve got my point it’s all delicious epic bbq and the river views can’t be beat (plus you can grab beer at the adjacent brewery). A stop worth making in Hood River!! ”

“ The lines can get super long here, but it's for good reason. After living in the south, I'm a bit of a BBQ snob but this place didn't disappoint (other than being a little sad they were out of brisket). The tri-tip and burnt ends were great and the Mac and cheese rocked. Will definitely hit them up again next time I'm in HR. ”

“ Wooow what a place! We were lucky enough to get here before it sold out on a Sunday, and ordered 2 lb brisket, a Chile verde sausage, regular sausage, a pulled pork sandwich, and 1 each of the sides. Everything was extremely gourmet and unique- epically delicious Chile verde sausage, perfect snap. The lean of the brisket passed the hang/pull test easily, and was exceptionally delicious and tender. The slaw had fresh peas and grated cured egg yolk in it. I can’t wait to go back! ”
